LOS ANGELES, April 19, 2007 -- NorthStar Moving Corporation, the leading residential and commercial mover in California, offering local, intrastate, interstate, and international moves, as well as storage services, is marking the start of the busy moving season with tips on choosing a moving company. As the school year wraps up, use of moving services spikes. Of all Californians intending to move in 2007, approximately 35% will do so in the three month period of June through August.
The award-winning company continually seeks ways to assist its customers. Its series of moving tips helps arm consumers with the information they need to find a reputable mover and protect their personal belongings. Tips include:
-- Know thy Stuff! Every move is unique. Two externally identical three bedroom two bathroom track houses on the same block will not contain the same amount of belongings. Explain in detail to your moving company how much you really have. Don't forget the garage.
-- If you are moving with a van line, make sure you ask the name of the actual agent handling your move. When checking references, you will need to check both the van line and the agent. A van line is only as good as the agent you are using.
-- Vet the company and its agents with the Better Business Bureau. This will be the most important call you make. They are your new best friend.
-- Check with the Public Utilities Commission to make sure the company is licensed and insured.
-- Ask for letters of recommendation.
-- Find out what the rates include and what they do not include. Do not pick your mover solely on the lowest hourly rate quoted (or lowest price per pound if you are moving out of state).
-- Ask if you can get a better rate if you move on a Sunday versus a Saturday. Sometimes lower rates are also available in the middle of the week such as on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
-- Find out what insurance the moving companies offer.
-- Check with your insurance carrier about whether you're covered with your homeowner's or renter's policy. If not, you may want to look in to supplemental insurance.
-- Before you move into your new place, plan out the space, this saves your movers a lot of time and you a lot of money. Using graph paper, draw rooms and furniture to scale and design where the furniture will go in each room. Knowing that the grand piano doesn't fit upstairs in that study before the day of the move can save you headaches and money on moving day.
-- Check to see if your neighborhood requires you to register for a parking permit for the moving truck at both the new and old home to be sure there is a clear and convenient space for loading and unloading.
-- Notify the moving company if you live in a canyon so they will know to send shuttles instead of trucks that may not fit on narrow roads.
